By: E&P Staff The Bakersfield Californian has announced it will cut 40 positions
throughout the company.

The family-owned business has seen its advertising revenues drop sharply, according to an article on KGET.com, the NBC affiliate for the Bakersfield, Calif., area.

In a press release, Californian newspaper President and CEO Richard Beene said, "Our revenue has always been tied directly to the slower real estate market and all the local businesses that are impacted by this kind of market. When our advertisers have a difficult year, we also suffer."

Beene added that the released employees have been offered severance packages by the company, and that seven new positions are in development to help usher the newspaper into the new media and information systems environment.
