Mary J. Corey has been promoted to the top editorial position of senior vice president and director of content at The Baltimore Sun.
A 23-year veteran editor and writer for the Sun, Corey becomes the first woman in the newspaper’s 173-year history to lead the newsroom.
“The Sun’s long-standing mission of delivering news and information to Marylanders about their world is more vital than ever, and I'm determined that our dedicated staff excel in that realm,” Corey said in a statement. “That means relying on the enduring values of journalism and seizing new opportunities to reach readers.”
Corey, a former national correspondent, joined the Sun in 1987 and soon became a features reporter. She has also served as assistant managing editor for features, deputy national editor and lifestyle editor.
Last year Corey was named to oversee the print side, and since March she has led the newsroom following the departure of J. Montgomery Cook, who left to teach journalism at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
This February, Corey oversaw the launch of three new print sections: Health & Style on Thursdays; a revamped Live! section on Fridays; and Business & Jobs on Sundays.
