By: In the latest sign of trouble for Tribune Co.'s cash-strapped newspapers, The Baltimore Sun is moving its suburban bureau employees to its downtown office and also plans another round of staff reductions, a union leader said.
Sun Editor J. Montgomery "Monty" Cook announced the moves in a staff meeting this afternoon, said Brent Jones, a Sun reporter and a unit chair with the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild.
A Sun spokeswoman said the newspaper's local coverage of Baltimore and its surrounding counties won't change.
The Sun is ending lease agreements for its office space in Anne Arundel, Howard and Baltimore counties, Jones said. About 15 reporters and editors will move into the newspaper's downtown office and will continue to cover their suburban beats, he said.
The Sun is owned by Chicago-based Tribune Co., which filed for bankruptcy in December.
It's not clear how many people will lose their jobs, Jones said.
The newspaper has gone through four rounds of buyouts and layoffs since December 2005, and its five foreign bureaus were closed during that period. About 100 jobs were eliminated last July, including 55 in the newsroom.
The Sun will keep its Washington, D.C., and Annapolis, Md., bureaus.
The Sun lost a competitor when The Baltimore Examiner, a free daily tabloid, announced in late January it would shut down. The Examiner's final issue will be published Sunday.
