Baltimore's 'Sun' Backs Obama and McCain

By: Citing his "compelling vision" for the country, The Sun of Baltimore endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama on Sunday. The newspaper also backed Republican candidate Sen. John McCain, lauding his ability to stand his ground on issues like immigration and torture.

The Sun acknowledged that both Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton promise a new political era and have the skills to deliver.

The New York senator said she "would be 'ready on Day One' to lead decisively, and indeed, her experience is one of her most appealing attributes," the paper said.

While Clinton would bring to the job experience from her time in Washington as first lady and in the Senate, the paper said her confrontations with the right have left her unpopular with many Americans.

Obama "wants to forge a new reality in Washington where consensus replaces confrontation," and is more likely to bring change, the Sun said. "Surprising numbers" have found the Illinois senator's pledge for change credible and he has convinced a new generation that it "has a stake in Washington."

"Untested in foreign affairs, Mr. Obama is not afraid to disagree with popular opinion, favoring dialogue with Cuba, Iran and other hostile powers, for instance," the Sun said. "But he still has lots to tell America about how he would govern and whom he would rely on to help him lead."

The Sun's endorsement of McCain points to the Arizona senator standing his ground on immigration reform, campaign finance and torture. The paper said McCain "is principled and has been willing to compromise," while voicing concern about how his overtures to conservatives would hurt his appeal to independents.

The newspaper also said it is concerned by McCain's willingness to keep American troops in Iraq, despite the war's financial drain on the nation
