Barboza of 'NY Times' Wins Award for Reporting in Asia

By: E&P Staff David Barboza, Shanghai-based correspondent for The New York Times, has been awarded the 2006 Hugo Shong Journalist of the Year Award for Reporting on Asia, The award is given by Boston University?s College of Communication to a journalist for advancing public insight into and understanding of the region through news or feature reporting.

"Hugo Shong generously endowed this reporting award to encourage and reward journalists who convey to global audiences the importance and impact of events in Asia," Dean of the College of Communication John Schulz said in a statement. "David Barboza?s work demonstrates that reporting on economic affairs can be a tool that touches on all aspects of life and society."

Barboza, primarily a business reporter, also wrote on Chinese art, film, television and dance while stationed in the country since 2004. Before moving to China, Barboza was based in Chicago as the Midwest business correspondent for the Times. While there, he covered the Enron scandal and received the Gerald Loeb Award for Deadline Writing in 2005 for his role in coverage of Lenovo?s acquisition of I.B.M.?s personal computer business.

The award comes with a $15,000 prize and is endowed by BU alumnus Hugo Shong, now senior vice-president of International Data Group, Inc., heading its Asian-Pacific operations.
