By: A new publisher has been named for the free newspaper amNew York, the paper announced yesterday.
Christopher Barnes, 35, succeeds the founding publisher, Russel Pergament, as publisher and general manager. Barnes had served as the paper's general manager since its inception in October 2003.
Pergament had made a commitment to the paper for three years, and he left after that time was up, amNew York said.
"Russel's left the paper in great shape, and left it in good hands," said Floyd Weintraub, senior vice president at the paper. Weintraub said Pergament had not announced any plans.
The paper, aimed at a younger audience, is published Monday through Friday by Tribune New York Newspaper Holdings. Weintraub said the paper's daily circulation was 320,000 citywide.
AmNew York is part of a fiercely competitive New York City newspaper market, going up against another free paper, Metro, in the push to draw young commuter readers.
