By: E&P Staff Sony Pictures Television has cleared reruns of the Emmy Award-winning children's series "Beakman's World" for fall syndication.

The live-action show, targeted at 13- to 16-year-olds, was originally created in 1993 and ran for one season on TLC and in syndication before going to CBS's Saturday morning kids block for an additional four seasons.

Based on the Universal Press Syndicate cartoon feature "You Can With Beakman & Jax" by Jok Church, the series starred Paul Zaloom as Professor Beakman, an eccentric scientist.

"Beakman's World" was a joint enterprise of Columbia Pictures Television, Columbia TriStar Television Distribution, and Universal Belo Productions. Mark Waxman served as executive producer and head writer.

Latest E&P Exclusive Reporting

Beyond the AI monolith

Artificial intelligence is often discussed as a single technology, but that shorthand obscures important differences in how these systems work and what they do. In his latest E&P column, Chad Davis argues that newsrooms need a clearer understanding of the technologies behind the hype. He explores AI through two practical lenses: the tools journalists use and the topics they cover. Understanding those distinctions can help journalists make more informed decisions, ask tougher questions and better explain AI’s impact on their communities.

A surprising tech revival holds an important lesson for news media publishers

Just when smartphones seemed to have rendered traditional cameras obsolete, something surprising happened. Compact cameras began making a comeback, particularly among younger consumers willing to pay premium prices for simpler, more intentional experiences. What can news media publishers learn from this unexpected revival? In his October “Tasaka’s Tech Talk” column, Guy T. Tasaka explores why consumers are rediscovering the appeal of dedicated cameras and what this trend reveals about audience fatigue with algorithms, endless digital distractions and always-on technology.

How publishers are rebuilding accountability reporting without adding newsroom staff

As shrinking newsroom staffs continue leaving major gaps in statehouse and government accountability coverage, publishers across the country are searching for ways to preserve essential journalism without adding significant overhead. Increasingly, many are turning to collaborative reporting models and syndicated newsroom partnerships designed to supplement local coverage while allowing already-stretched staffs to stay focused on their communities. How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
