By: E&P Staff "Beetle Bailey" has won a comics poll that drew 5,751 readers, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette announced yesterday.
The King Features Syndicate strip is by Mort Walker (who created "Beetle Bailey" in 1950), his sons Greg and Brian Walker, and Jerry Dumas.
King comics also made a clean sweep of the next four places. Second was "Zits" by Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman, third was "The Family Circus" by Bil and Jeff Keane, fourth was "Blondie" by Dean Young and John Marshall, and fifth was "Baby Blues" by Jerry Scott and Rick Kirkman.
The poll was conducted via a clip-and-mail questionnaire in the paper. That kind of survey tends to attract an older mix of respondents than online polls, as a September 2007 story in E&P's print magazine noted.
Mentioning the survey today were Tom Spurgeon's
Comics Reporter blog and Alan Gardner's
Daily Cartoonist blog.
A long Democrat-Gazette story about the poll results can be seen
