By: E&P Staff Since the Dallas Morning News and The Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise late last year went live on the hosted Merlin Digital Content Management System to handle stories, images and multimedia content, parent company A H. Belo Corp.'s Providence (R.I.) Journal has followed.
Editors now looking for photos or stories access a system hosted by MerlinOne, Quincy, Mass., that houses all their data in a secure, fault-tolerant co-location facility.
With the system supplied as Software as a Service, "the MerlinOne pricing model was extremely attractive to us," A. H. Belo Technologies Publishing Applications Director Andy Young said in a statement.
All the papers' data were transferred from legacy SCC archive and picture-desk systems to MerlinOne's data center, which features generator backups and connections to four Internet backbones. Data center technology cuts storage required for newspaper content by up to 70%.
Merlin serves as a production picture desk and archive for all forms of digital content. Users can organize millions of photos, video and audio files, graphics, stories, PDF files and Microsoft Office documents using fast, precise searching and easy drag-and-drop workflows.
MerlinOne also will host its Trax assignment and workflow system, which supports photo, video, story, audio, graphics, scanning and research assignments. Trax integrates with Merlin, adding rights management, scheduling and contact information.
