Belo Reports Strong Jan. Results

By: E&P Staff Belo reported today newspaper group total revenue grew 6.1% for the month of January compared to the same period last year. Advertising revenue increased 5.2%.

At the Dallas Morning News, total revenue increased 9.6%, including an estimated $2.4 million in incremental circulation revenue associated primarily with changes in distribution systems. Ad revenue at the paper, which advanced 6.4%, was not affected. General ROP revenue at the paper grew 21%. Classified revenue was up 6.4% with a 37% increase in help-wanted. Real estate was almost flat, up 0.3%. Auto declined 18%. Retail revenue dropped 2.2% with gains in the department store and travel categories. The furniture and sporting goods categories were soft.

At The Providence Journal, ad revenue rose 5.6% with total revenue up 2.8%. Classified revenue grew 6.9%.

Advertising revenue at The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., grew 1.6% against tough comparisons. Total revenue was down 0.4%. Classified revenue was up while retail and general revenue declined.
