By: Dave Astor Moralist Bill Bennett was in the news for gambling, but not in
The Journal News of White Plains, N.Y. Some people wondered if Bennett's name was dropped deliberately from this past Sunday's "Doonesbury" comic, but American Color (AC) said it was a production error.
The June 22 "Doonesbury" featured agent Sid being asked by "Walt" if he could supply a speaker for a convention. When Dr. Phil and Laura Schlessinger were deemed too expensive, Sid suggested "Bill Bennett for $250 and carfare." Walt replied: "Done. But I'll need a morals clause." But Bennett's name didn't show up in
The Journal News.
Accounts Manager Andy Olsen of AC -- which handles Sunday comic sections for
The Journal News and hundreds of other newspapers -- said
The Journal News was the only paper missing Bennett's name from the "Doonesbury" strip. "It was a very rare error," he said. "There must have been a bad spot on the film that caused a blur. It was totally accidental."
CynDee Royle, senior managing editor at
The Journal News, confirmed she was told by AC that there was "some kind of mechanical problem with the negative."
The Journal News, like most papers in the country, doesn't print Sunday comics in-house. Royle added that her paper only received one reader letter about the matter as of June 24.
"Doonesbury" is by Garry Trudeau of Universal Press Syndicate.
