By: The New Jersey Supreme Court is set to hear arguments Wednesday in a case about reporting allegations in a lawsuit before any court proceedings have taken place.
The case stems from a 2008 appeals court decision that found The Record of Bergen County can be sued for libel for its reporting of a lawsuit.
In a March 2006 story, the newspaper wrote about a federal bankruptcy court complaint that alleged Thomas Salzano misappropriated money from a now-defunct telecommunications company.
Salzano sued the newspaper, saying the allegations in the complaint were unfounded.
Prior to the appeals court ruling, newspapers were not liable as long as they accurately quoted allegations in a suit.
The ruling was put on hold until the state Supreme Court could consider it.
