By: Dave Astor The Miami Herald is offering comics fans good news and bad news. It plans to make some weekday comics bigger, but run fewer of them.
In a note to readers posted Monday, the Herald said: "We've heard from many of you that some comics are still too small, and to fix this, we're going to weed out a few." So, in a "Comics Survivor Contest" running through Friday, the newspaper is asking readers to choose four comics to drop from a list of eight.
The eight -- a number of them widely syndicated and long-running -- include "Marmaduke," "Blondie," "Grand Avenue," "The Family Circus," "Sally Forth," "For Better or For Worse," "Hagar the Horrible," and "Non Sequitur."
The Herald did note that dropping some comics "will give us space enough to add one or two new ones."
Many newspapers have crammed more comics to a page in recent years rather than expand their funnies sections.
