Bill Duncan, 80, a former managing editor of the Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times, died Friday.
A native of the Lone Star state, Duncan graduated from Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1949
after serving in World War II as a member of the U.S. Army Air Forces.
Duncan worked at several newspapers in Texas before joining the
Caller-Times in 1961, starting at the Wharton Journal and moving on to the San Antonio Express and the El Campo Citizen.
In his 25 years at the paper from 1961 until 1980, Duncan worked as a
reporter, Sunday editor, news editor and city editor for both the
Caller-Times and its afternoon imprint, The Times.
Fellow Caller-Times staffers remember Duncan's ability to coach his journalists on quality writing, and for his own skills as an engaging
storyteller.
Upon retirement, Duncan was involved in renovating a cemetery started by his grandparents in 1908. Duncan's beautification work on the project was honored in 2001 when the property became a Historic Texas Cemetery.
