Bill Simmons’s move to HBO, which was announced Wednesday after he had spent nearly three months in limbo, takes him to a premium network that can give him even more freedom to speak his mind than ESPN did and a chance to develop a strong TV presence. Simmons will host a weekly talk show starting next year that will span sports and popular culture, the same areas plumbed by Grantland.com, the website that ESPN built around Simmons and that he ran until the company announced in May that it would not renew his contract.
