By: E&P Staff Ricky Mathews, president and publisher of The Sun-Herald of Biloxi, Miss., announced Tuesday that he would be leaving the paper in early August to take a new position outside the McClatchy Co.
Mathews, who started as an intern at the Sun-Herald in 1982, did not disclose details of his new position. Bob Weil, VP/operations for McClatchy, said the company is actively looking for a successor.
Mathews was the paper's vice president/marketing director when he was named president and publisher in 2001. While at the Sun-Herald he also held various positions in the advertising, circulation, production, operations, and marketing departments. A Mississippi native, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi, from which he holds bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration.
The paper won a Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service in Journalism in 2006 for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina. In the six weeks after the hurricane, 80,000 papers were delivered free across the Gulf Coast, while the Sun-Herald never missed a day of publication.
Following Hurricane Katrina, Mathews was named vice chairman of the
Governor?s Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal by Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour.
