By: Mark Fitzgerald Target Market News Inc., the Chicago-based research firm specializing in African-American consumers, is launching a monthly tabloid about black business that will be distributed in the Chicago Defender.
Black Business Chicago will have an initial circulation of 25,000, said Target Market News President Ken Smikle, the monthly's publisher.
"A publication to serve Chicago's black business community is long overdue" Smikle said Wednesday. "This city has been considered the historic capital of black entrepreneurship for decades, and it continues to be home to many of the nation's largest black-owned enterprises, such as Harpo Inc., Johnson Publishing Co., Ariel Investments and Luster Products Co.
"Chicago represents one of the largest concentrations of black-owned businesses in the country, but there is no singular media vehicle that brings together news, information, research and commentary about this dynamic community," he added.
The monthly tabloid publication and a companion Web site, BlackBusinessChicago.com, will be written and edited by Target Market News with contributions from business journalists at Chicago newspapers and magazines.
"I'll always believe in the potential for print, especially niche media business models," Smikle said of the decision to launch in print.
Black Business Chicago also plans to hold conferences and publish reports on black business developments and opportunities in the market.
