By: E&P Staff Robert "Bob" Blau is existing as maanging editor of the Baltimore Sun. He told staffers today in a memo: "The time is right for me to take a breath before charging on. I don't know exactly what lies ahead (except for jury duty!). But I am certain that I will carry with me all that you demonstrated so routinely: dogged inquisitiveness, natural skepticism, breathtaking resourcefulness and unwavering ethics. These qualities are the foundation of a decent and vital profession, and will ultimately, despite the current pressures, preserve it."
The memo was first posted at the Romenesko site at www.poynter.org.
Another memo posted there from Editor Tim Franklin included the following.

This is a possibility that Bob and I have been discussing for the past couple of months. Bob was committed, however, to working on the newsroom reorganization and contributing to our just-launched redesign. With those two important things now behind us, Bob believes this is the right time for him to take a breather, take stock and spend some well-earned time with his family.
Bob's contributions to The Sun these past nearly four years have been immense. He's a superb journalist who is passionate about our mission, and a newsroom leader who has inspired legions of you in the pursuit of excellent storytelling and aggressive reporting. Through it all, he's also been a great colleague whose quick wit and self-deprecating humor have lightened the darkest of moments.
He arrived here nearly four years ago with a reputation as one of the nation?s best enterprise and investigative editors, having led the Chicago Tribune to an array of national awards...
With Bob's departure, deputy managing editors Marcia Myers and Paul Moore will report directly to me.
