Block Communications, Inc. subsidiary purchases Pittsburgh City Paper

Cars Holding, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Block Communications, Inc. will acquire Pittsburgh City Paper from Eagle Media, the publisher of the Butler Eagle, which has operated the weekly tabloid paper and digital site since 2016. The closing will take place this month; terms were not disclosed.

Block Communications, an Ohio based corporation, is also the owner of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Blade of Toledo. All employees of the City Paper will be retained and the company will ensure that the City Paper will operate autonomously, continuing to serve as Pittsburgh’s alternative news weekly.

Ron Vodenichar, president and publisher of the Butler Eagle said, “We are pleased to announce that we have found an excellent successor to continue the Pittsburgh City Paper. We have learned over time that the City Paper wasn’t a good fit for our business and trying to manage a Pittsburgh publication from a distance just wasn’t working. Cars Holding, Inc. stepped up with their offer at the right time and saved the publication from a potential closing and saved the jobs of the employees. We wish the employees well and hope the publication, under strong ownership, experiences many more years of serving the city of Pittsburgh.”

Allan Block, chairman and chief executive officer of Block Communications said, “We believe in the need for independent journalism and are happy to further our commitment to the city of Pittsburgh and, specifically, to support this well-established entertainment and alternative news publication.”
