By: E&P Staff Bloggers at the Honolulu Advertiser went on strike last week in protest of changes to their union contract proposed by their owner, Gannett Company. This marked the first-ever blog strike officials at the Newspaper Guild, Communications Workers of America, told The New York Times.
The Advertiser started publishing blogs two years ago, and blogging duties are shared among editors, freelancers, and reporters. While the editors and freelancers continued their work, reporters, who are not contractually obligated to blog, stopped writing. During the three-day strike the reporters? only posts were an explanation of their collective suspension from blogging.
While they still had to produce print stories, they withheld their names to show opposition to the union contract. Their current contract expired last summer, and the byline strike was a reaction Gannett?s unexpected offer in late January after months had gone by without negotiations.
Gannet agreed to return to the bargaining table on Friday, at which point some bloggers went back to work.
