By: E&P Staff "Doonesbury" creator Garry Trudeau was praised by Michael Weisskopf, the Time magazine writer who wrote "Blood Brothers: Among the Soldiers of Ward 57 " after losing a hand in Iraq.

The praise came when Weisskopf was interviewed by Ben Steelman of the Wilmington, N.C., Star-News. The exchange:

Steelman: "You mentioned that 'Doonesbury' picked up the story line of its character B.D. losing a leg. What did the guys on Ward 57 think of that?"

Weisskopf: "I think they believe it's nice to have the attention given to their lives. Garry Trudeau, whom I've met through this process, is a real solid guy. He goes to Ward 57 regularly and uses proceeds from his work to help the Fisher House Foundation, which runs family support centers for wounded soldiers."

The Star-News interview was linked to today by ComicsReporter.com.

Weisskopf lost his hand after picking up and trying to throw a grenade while riding with soldiers in an Army Humvee. His act might have saved at least three lives.

"Doonesbury" appears in about 1,400 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.
