Bloomberg Weighs In on Big Unit's Short Fuse With NYC Press

Posted
By: (AP) Mayor Michael Bloomberg, himself no stranger to conflict during his first term at City Hall, joked today that he's planning a meeting with newly signed New York Yankees pitching ace Randy Johnson, who clashed with photographers on a Manhattan street a day earlier.

"Randy actually has to sit down with me for some tips on how to deal with the New York City press corps," added Bloomberg.

The 6-10 Johnson, who was traded to the Yankees last week, got into a confrontation on a Manhattan sidewalk with a newspaper photographer and a television cameraman yesterday on the way to his physical, then apologized in a statement released later in the day.

Johnson, known as "The Big Unit," opened a news conference Tuesday at Yankee Stadium by talking about the confrontation. "I'd first like to once again reiterate: The situation yesterday, it was unprofessional," Johnson said, "and obviously I feel very foolish today at such a great moment of my career that I would have to stand before you and apologize for my actions. Hopefully it's water under the bridge."
