'Blytheville (Ark.) Courier News' Converts to CTP

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Blytheville (Ark.) Courier News moved from film-based platemaking to computer-to-plate output in August after repeated problems with improper register from inconsistent film output.

"The first 100 feet of a 200-foot roll would work fine, but after that the consistency would drop off quickly," Publisher David Tennyson said in a statement. "We changed manufacturers and used different types of film, and still couldn't get the film to register properly."

The Courier News chose a total-solution package from the Southern Lithoplate CtP Alliance to reduce operating costs, improve productivity and deliver a better product.

Published Sunday through Friday, the 110-year-old Courier News circulates approximately 5,000 copies. The company, in the state's northeast corner, also owns and prints one area weekly in Arkansas and two others nearby in Missouri. Much of the commercial work it runs on its 15-unit Goss Community press consists of four-page broadsheet auto dealerships ads. "We print anywhere from six to 12 of these a week that are circulated throughout the mid-South. Each one is at least 80,000 copies," Tennyson said.

To image Viper 830 plates from Southern Lithoplate, its longtime analog plate supplier, the Courier News installed a Screen PlateRite News 2000LE platesetter and CA Systems/Egraph Polyheat 33 processor. The paper opted for the Nela Benchmark three-point plate bender and uses Polkadots Software's Newsflo workflow.
