By: Joe Strupp Bob Woodward, who has written 14 books -- including three on President George W. Bush -- will publish his fourth Bush account later this year.
Woodward, who mentioned the book during an appearance last week on the syndicated Chris Matthews show -- as he was asserting the continuing importance of Iraq as an issue -- declined to elaborate on its content when contacted by E&P Wednesday. "The book will be out later this year and it will speak for itself," he said by phone from his home. "Some time later this year."
Woodward, who remains an assistant managing editor at The Washington Post, has received both praise and criticism for his book projects. The first two books in the Bush series offered what many considered sympathetic accounts of Bush's tenure in office and included lengthy interviews with the president.
The last book, 2006's "State of Denial," was much more critical.
With the current mix of strong public sentiment against the Iraq War, but some tangible progress since "the surge," the tone of the next book remains a mystery. The Los Angeles Times said in a recent story that publisher Simon & Schuster "describes it as an exhaustive look at the president's waning years in office."
Asked about the book's focus, Woodward said only, "I generally like to let the books speak for themselves."
