Bogalusa Daily News Moves to CTP

Posted
By: Meg Campbell The Daily News of Bogalusa, La., will install a Screen PlateRite News 2000 CTP imagesetter at the end of January. The thermal imaging device includes a poly heat oven and processor, and is capable of speeds of 41 plates per hour.

The installation is one of the last steps in a remodeling project that began at the paper?s production facility in early 2005, but was derailed by Hurricane Katrina in August of the same year. The facility, PN Printing, prints The Daily News, St. Tammany News (a combination of what was the Slidell Sentry and the Covington News Banner before Katrina) and the Laplace L'Observateur.

"It took a year to get storm-related repairs behind us, [and] remodeling did not resume until 2007," explains John Walker, Editor and Publisher of the Daily News.

Daily News owner Wick Communications acquired a Kansa inserting machine for the facility in the summer of 2006 to ?help handle volume and to deal with personnel issues brought about by Katrina,? and a year later remodeling work resumed.

The paper unveiled a redesign in October, the result of a universal layout desk at the Covington paper. The plans, "which are working" were to remove page layout responsibilities from Bogalusa newsroom to allow for more productivity, Walker says.

The remodeling opened up space for the CTP equipment and updated the office areas of the newspaper as well, Walker adds.
