By: E&P Staff Boise Inc. is idling indefinitely one of two newsprint machines at its DeRidder, La., mill.
The machine has not run since Feb. 9, reported the American Press newspaper in Lake Charles, La. Ten salaried employees were let go, and 95 hourly workers will remain on layoff status as a result of the idling.
"The drastic decline in newsprint demand is an external factor that none of us can control," Boise President and CEO Alexander Toeldte said in a statement. "Indefinitely idling the machine minimizes our costs while preserving our future options."
The machine, designated D-2, could be restarted quickly if needed, Boise said. It could also be converted to produce packaging product, the company added.
