By: E&P Staff The Boston Globe dropped the Sunday "Garfield" yesterday -- after dropping the daily "Garfield" last month.
It's at least the third major-market newspaper to cancel Jim Davis' cat comic in 2005. The other two were The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. (E&P Online, Oct. 2) and the Los Angeles Times (E&P Online, Jan. 5).
The Globe will publish "Calvin and Hobbes" reruns instead of "Garfield" for the next three months, after which it will select a permanent replacement.
"Garfield," which began in 1978, remains the world's most widely distributed comic -- appearing in about 2,600 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.
The Globe also announced that it has reconfigured the layout of its Sunday comics section and "Funpages" to publish the same number of strips in fewer pages. Many newspapers have made similar moves in recent years to reduce newsprint costs.
