By: The Boston Globe launched a paid electronic edition today with technology from NewsStand Inc. of Austin, Texas.

Customers will be able to download exact digital replicas of the print Globe newspaper via the Web and the proprietary NewsStand Reader software. Single copies and subscriptions are available for purchase at www.bostonglobe.com/ee.

The Globe's parent company, the New York Times Co., is an investor in NewsStand, which also provides the digital edition of The New York Times.

"Readers of The Boston Globe are technically savvy and heavy PC users, so we believe they will find our digital alternative a convenient way to obtain the news -- even if they are living or traveling outside of Boston," said NewsStand CEO and President Kit Webster in a statement.

NewsStand is expected to announce a new magazine client on Tuesday.
