By: E&P Staff The Boston Globe has appointed Robert F. Burns as senior vice president/production operations. As of Sept. 11, Burns will be responsible for all Globe production and commercial printing. He reports to Globe President and General Manager Mary Jacobus.
Before joining the Globe Burns, 53, was senior vice president of operations at Newspaper Agency Corp., which is responsible for all business-side activities of The Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret Morning News, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Burns earlier worked at Knight Ridder for 23 years in various senior operations roles, including production vice president at Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., operations vice president at The Charlotte Observer; and operations vice president at the Detroit Newspaper Agency and the Detroit Free Press.
With experience managing all aspects of daily operations, from pre-press through distribution, and in process improvement and staff performance, Burns oversaw construction and start up of NAC's $89 million plant and office complex for MediaNews Group. The plant became fully operational last May.
Burns joined the Miami Herald in 1975 after serving in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant, and a maintenance officer and navigator aboard the destroyer USS William V. Pratt. He earned a degree in engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a master's degree in administration from George Washington University.
