By: E&P Staff Mary Jacobus has been appointed president and general manager of The Boston Globe, effective Jan. 9.

Jacobus, 48, most recently served as publisher of The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind., and chief executive officer of Fort Wayne Newspapers.

During her four years in Fort Wayne, Jacobus has overseen business operations for Fort Wayne Newspapers, Inc. (which publishes the News-Sentinel and The Journal Gazette), representing the majority partner, Knight Ridder, in an arrangement with the locally owned Journal Gazette Co.

In a report published today, Jacobus told the News-Sentinel her departure had nothing to do with the uncertainty surrounding the possible sale of Knight Ridder, saying, "The job in Boston was simply an exceptional opportunity for me and my family."

Previously, Jacobus served as president and publisher of the Duluth (Minn.) News Tribune from 1998-2001, and was vice president of sales and marketing at The Gazette in Colorado Springs from 1995 to 1998.
