'BOSTON GLOBE' NAMES NEW EDITOR

Posted
By: Lucia Moses 'Miami Herald' Editor To Replace Storin

Miami Herald Executive Editor Marty Baron was named editor
of The Boston Globe Monday. He will replace Globe
veteran Mathew V. Storin, who said he will retire at the end of
July to have more time for family and other interests.

The Herald named Tom Fielder, its editorial page editor,
to succeed Baron.

Baron, 46, known for his hard news drive and support of
reporters, oversaw the Herald's coverage of two of the top
news stories of 2000, the Presidential election and Elian
Gonzalez sagas (the latter won the paper a Pulitzer Prize).

He's not new to the New York Times Co., parent of the
Globe. Before taking his current job in 1999, he worked
three years in various editing posts at the Times
newspaper. A native of Tampa, Fla., he started his journalism
career at the Miami Herald as a state reporter in 1976.

Baron's appointment to the Globe is the latest top
management change for the paper since the Times Co. bought it in
1993. The Times Co. replaced Publisher Benjamin B. Taylor, the
last member of the Globe's ruling family, with
Times veteran Richard H. Gilman in 1999; a move that led
observers to wonder if Storin's days were numbered.

Storin started at the Globe in 1969 as a Washington
correspondent, and worked there as a reporter and editor until
1985. He rejoined the paper as executive editor in 1992, becoming
editor in 1993.

Under Storin, the paper expanded its regional coverage and
technology and employment news in an effort to build circulation
with affluent readers. His tenure was rocked by bad press in 1998
when two prized columnists, Mike Barnicle and Patricia Smith,
were accused of fabricating stories.

Baron will inherit the Globe's struggle to fight long-term
circulation declines and solidify the paper's identity in
Boston's growing suburbs, home to dozens of small competing
papers.

Baron was named E&P's Editor of the Year in April.
