Boulder Newspaper To Switch To Denver Printer

Posted
By: Colorado?s Daily Camera newspaper ceased press operations at its plant in downtown Boulder earlier this week and began printing at the nearby Denver plant owned by its co-owners, EW Scripps Company and MediaNews Group.

The plant, operated by the Denver Newspaper Agency, prints The Denver Post and The Rocky Mountain News. The Camera moved distribution operations to Denver back in January.

The Boulder daily laid off 19 workers and decommissioned the 30-plus year old Goss Metroliner at its Pearl St. facility. The paper will continue to print commercial work, special sections and a free daily on its Goss Community press at its Arapahoe St. site, says Bill Watson, VP of Operations at the Camera.

The paper now sends PDF page files to CTP platesetters at the Denver facility, where papers are produced on five MAN Roland Geoman presses.

?We now have 32 pages of color, and we?re building the paper in one run,? Watson says, adding that the move has also led to the paper changing from a 5o-inch to 48-inch format. ?It was something that had to be done,? Watson says, explaining that the paper needed to take advantage of the groups? synergies.

The Camera is published by Prairie Mountain Publishing, a newspaper management and operating partnership created in 2006 by Scripps Company and MediaNews.
