By: E&P Staff and The Associated Press Par Ridder resigned from the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Friday, nine months after taking over as publisher -- and later barred from the job in a complex legal tangle.
The resignation came with settlement of a lawsuit filed against the Star Tribune by the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Ridder's former employer, over his hiring.
The nine-page settlement filed in Ramsey County District Court on Friday largely follows an order handed down by Judge David Higgs in September.
Higgs found that Ridder caused "irreparable harm" when he left the Pioneer Press for Minneapolis. His old newspaper accused him of taking confidential financial data and other trade secrets with him.
Higgs' ruling forced Ridder out of his job as publisher of the Star Tribune for a year, until September 2008.
The main difference between Higgs' order and the settlement is that former Pioneer Press advertising manager Jennifer Parratt will be able to start working at the Star Tribune in January, four months early.
The settlement comes on the heels of the news that Ridder, Parratt and the Star Tribune planned to make their case to the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
