By: Jim Rosenberg Fox Print Direct, a New Orleans web and sheetfed printer of newspaper inserts, installed a Bravo-T saddle stitcher, which it also uses for its education clients. The eight-pocket model with integrated cover folder/feeder replaces older eight- and four-pocket machines while increasing capacity. Besides its top run rate of 11,000 cycles/hour, the Bravo-T's tool-free set-up and automated assisted makereadies suit Fox's short- to medium-run jobs.
Fox's stitched products range from glossy real estate guides printed on enamel stock to inserts with tissue-thin pages. Volumes vary from a few thousand copies to 85,000 per run. Fox reported the stitcher has produced over 500,000 books in its first month. It equipped its Bravo-T with Muller Martini's Asir signature recognition system, which inspects every book and rejects any with a misaligned signature.
A technician installed the machine in three weeks and spent almost another week training an inexperienced operator. A second technician followed up to ensure proper operation.
