By: The Brigham Young University Communications Department informed
Editor & Publisher Friday that two students who redesigned the school's NewsNet Web site copied portions of Builder.com, an instructional site on Web design. The site was a finalist for Best College Newspaper Internet Service in the 2003 EPpy awards sponsored by
E&P and
Mediaweek magazines.
Jim Kelly, general manager of NewsNet, requested that the student-run site no longer be listed as a finalist in the
2003 EPpy awards, which were presented May 9. Kelly also said the Provo, Utah-based school was returning a first place award for Web page design sponsored by the University of Missouri chapter of the Society of Newspaper Design.
"What the students did is wrong, and we apologize to the two contest sponsors and the owners of the Builder.com Web site," Kelly said in a letter to
E&P.
In redesigning NewsNet, the students "used design elements from Builder.com, including graphics, table definitions, and a similar color palette that mirrored the other site," Kelly said. The copied materials were removed from the BYU site, and the staff is now working on another redesign.
