Browning Named Publisher of Myrtle Beach Paper

By: E&P Staff Pamela "P.J." Browning has been appointed as president and publisher of The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She held the same position previously at The Telegraph in Macon, Ga.

Browning, 43, succeeds Gary Wortel who was named president and publisher of the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram. McClatchy owns all three papers.

"P.J. is a very talented publisher who can lead and inspire a newspaper staff to great accomplishments," Gary Pruitt, McClatchy's CEO and chairman, in a statement. "She has a long track record of success and innovation at a number of different newspapers."

Browning began her newspaper career in 1984 at The Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader. She served as advertising director at the Fort Collins Coloradoan, retail advertising manager at The Grand Rapids (Mich.) Press, and advertising director at Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times. She was also president and publisher of The Sentinel in Carlisle, Pa. and the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa.

"Under [Browning's] leadership, Macon has been one of McClatchy's top newspapers in terms of re-engineering operations and innovative use of the Internet," Lynn Dickerson, vice president of operations at McClatchy, said in a statement.
