By: E&P Staff Bruce G. Ray, CFO of The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, Calif., for the past year, was promoted to president and publisher of The McClatchy Co. newspaper Tuesday.
Ray succeeds Chip Visci, who is retiring.
McClatchy said the appointment is effective Oct. 13.
"I want to thank Chip for his stewardship of The Tribune and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life," McClatchy Chairman and CEO Gary Pruitt said in a statement. "We're very happy to find Chip's successor within McClatchy and within The Tribune. Bruce Ray is a natural leader whose broad business experience will serve the newspaper well going forward."
Ray, 38, joined The Tribune from Trimble Navigation Limited in Colorado, a maker of GPS, survey equipment and other engineering and construction products. He has also had finance positions at Excite@Home, Mars Inc., Intel Corp., and Nissan Motor Corp.
Ray holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis.
