Bryan to Step Down as Media General CEO

By: E&P Staff J. Stewart Bryan III will step down in July as chief executive officer of Media General Inc., the company his father founded, but he will remain chairman of the company.

Bryan, 66, previously relinquished his role as publisher of the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch on Jan. 1.

Marshall N. Morton, currently vice chairman and chief financial officer of the Richmond-based company, will become president and CEO. Reid Ashe, Media General's president, will continue as chief operating officer and will also become executive vice president; his responsibilities will include supervising the publishing, broadcast, and interactive operations. In addition, John A. Schauss, 48, the company's treasurer will assume further responsibilities as vice president-finance and chief financial officer.

In his new role, Bryan will have less involvement with the company's day-to-day activities, though he will remain engaged in business decisions.

Media General has annual revenue of $900 million and publishes 25 newspapers, including The Tampa Tribune and the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The company also owns 26 television stations, part of a newsprint business, and more than 50 online operations.
