By: (AP) Margaret E. Buchanan has been named publisher of The Cincinnati Enquirer, becoming the first woman to have the job in the newspaper's 162-year history.

The newspaper's parent, Gannett Co. Inc., announced the hiring in Wednesday's editions. Buchanan also will be the Enquirer's president.

She succeeds Harry Whipple, the Enquirer's president and publisher since January 1992. Whipple, 55, has retired.

Buchanan, 45, has been publisher of The Idaho Statesman in Boise since 1999. She grew up in Cincinnati and began her newspaper career with the Enquirer in 1986. She moved to management positions at the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star and the Elmira (N.Y.) Star-Gazette before becoming publisher in Idaho.

Buchanan comes to the Enquirer as many newspapers are struggling to attract advertisers and readers. She said she will spend the next year formulating a vision for the newspaper.

"There are a lot of complex issues that we need to figure out," Buchanan said. "I just need to spend time talking, listening, asking a lot of questions."

The Enquirer has daily circulation of 197,415 and a Sunday circulation of 309,134. The Idaho Statesman has a daily circulation of 66,028 and a Sunday circulation of 88,173.
