By: E&P Staff Some 300 University of Michigan journalism alumni -- including three Pulitzer Prize winners -- are expected to gather this weekend at the Stanford Lipsey Student Publications Building, where the edifice's namesake will announce another big donation to aid future journalists.
Lipsey, publisher of The Buffalo (N.Y.) News, helped fund nearly half of the renovation of the building plus the costs of new journalism programs and financial aid with a $3 million donation in 2005. Friday, the school said, he will announce a $300,000 gift that will be matched by the President's Donor Challenge to create a $600,000 endowment to fund scholarships for student journalists working on a campus publication.
Ultimately, the gift will fund $5,000 scholarships each for as many as six student journalists.
Lipsey began his career as a journalist 62 years ago as a photographer for the Michigan Daily and the school's yearbook.
"It's a great privilege for me to have helped restore the building where so many grew their college experiences into successful professional careers, as so many will in the future," Lipsey said in a statement released by the school.
A dedication ceremony is scheduled to begin the reunion Friday evening with a keynote speech by Ann Marie Lipinski, a former Michigan Daily editor and Pulitzer winner who is now senior vice president and editor of the Chicago Tribune.
The student publication building, noted for its tiled roof, stained glass windows, and arched newsroom ceiling, was built in the 1960s. The included new heating, wiring, and the addition of air conditioning plus improvements in handicapped accessibility.
