'Buffalo News' Sheds Staffers in Latest Buyouts

Posted
By: The Buffalo News' latest buyout offer has been accepted by 27 employees, including several veteran reporters.

Along with eight people in the newsroom, employees in circulation, accounting and classified advertising have accepted a package negotiated by managers and the Buffalo Newspaper Guild that will have them retire as of April 30.

It is the second early retirement offer at the paper in two years. Last year, 46 Guild members accepted, reducing the payroll by $2.9 million annually.

Reporter James Heaney, a member of the Guild's executive committee, says those leaving the newsroom in this round include reporters Gene Warner, Michael Beebe, Tom Buckham, Peter Simon, Alan Pergament and three editors.

Savings of at least $1.3 million are expected.
