By: E&P Staff The Buffalo (N.Y.) News has extended the deadline of its buyout offer to Newspaper Guild-represented employees one week -- and warned layoffs may be coming.

The deadline for the buyout offer to about 300 members Buffalo Newspaper Guild CWA-Local 31026 had been Saturday, but was extended to March 6, Business First of Buffalo reported in a story on its Web site by James Fink.

The News is offering a one-time payment of a minimum of $60,000, before taxes, with no benefits.

Business First reported that "only a handful of Guild members" are apparently considering the offer. In a letter to Guild members, the paper, owned by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., said it may be forced to impose layoffs if not enough workers accept the buyout.
