By: E&P Staff Geoffrey Gevalt, the managing editor of The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press for 8 1/2 years, has announced his resignation, the paper reported today. Gevalt plans to dedicate his time to The Young Writers Project.
Gevalt founded the project four years ago at the Free Press with the intention of improving student writing in Vermont schools. According to the Free Press, the project has a weekly newspaper and a Web site that publishes articles by students that analyze the writing of noted teachers and professionals. Gevalt is creating a nonprofit organization to aid the progression of the project, and has also received a two-year grant.
Gevalt?s career at the Free Press began in 1998, when he joined the paper as an assistant managing editor. He was promoted to managing editor in 2000, and during his tenure, the paper received several national and local awards.
