By: E&P Staff President George W. Bush has overtaken Senator John Kerry in the race for the most newspaper endorsements in the red-hot presidential contest but continues to trail by a wide margin in the circulation-impact category.
The latest confirmed picks, both for Bush: the Mobile (Ala.) Register and the The Courier in Findlay, Ohio. Bush now leads Kerry 6-5 in known endorsements but trails in total daily circ. (See chart below.)
E&P will be issuing daily bulletins on endorsements and the circulation figures for each paper every weekday until Election Day, and we'll also note which candidate the paper backed in 2000, wherever possible. We have asked readers to help us by sending word of formal endorsements to
letters@editorandpublisher.com.
Our first report yesterday provoked more than 100 letters, including tips on the Mobile and Findlay papers.
About half those emails, however, pointed out that we had left off Kerry's list the now-famous Lone Star Iconoclast, Bush's so-called "hometown" paper near Crawford, Texas. But the Iconoclast is a weekly, and we are including only daily newspapers.
Also, many readers claimed that papers such as The Dallas Morning News, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, The Arizona Republic, and The New York Times had already endorsed. No, they haven't. Readers may confuse what appears to be a friendly attitude toward a candidate with a formal announcement. We are waiting for the final word.
Some readers also claimed that Kerry that been endorsed by Le Monde and Pravda, not to mention al-Jazeera and GQ. Hey, even if any of that were true, we still only care about U.S. daily papers!
The chart below includes daily circulation numbers from the latest FAS-FAX report from the Audit Bureau for Circulations. We also note, where we can, who the paper picked in 2000, with a "B" for Bush and a "G" for Gore.
