Buy and Bye: No Layoffs Needed at Philly Papers

By: E&P Staff Management at the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News apparently reached its buyout goals at the two papers and will not have to resort to layoffs.

A memo by Henry J. Holcomb, president of The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia, to guild mobilizers this afternoon revealed, "Management just informed the Guild that there will be NO layoffs. Buyout goals have been achieved in both the Daily News and Inquirer. We appreciate everybody, including many in management, who have worked hard to protect the jobs of those who want to stay and keep serving our readers and advertisers."

The buyout goal at the Inquirer was 75, while the Daily News sought 25.
