By: E&P Staff Daryl Cagle, cartoonist for MSNBC.com and the man behind Daryl Cagle's Political Cartoonists Index, has posted an interview with two leading female alternative cartoonists.
In an interview recorded at last week's Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) Convention in Seattle, Cagle, along with Mikhaela Reid and Jen Sorensen, discussed the state of the industry, particularly as it related to alternative newspapers ("I feel that the well-run alternative papers will survive," says Sorensen), and the struggles female cartoonists face ("I see a lot of comics about women but not a lot by women," says Reid).
Reid is a freelance cartoonist based in Brooklyn whose work has appeared in several publications, including the Los Angeles Times, The Guardian in England, and Ms. Magazine. Sorensen's comic strip "Slowpoke" has appeared in the Village Voice, among other alternative weekly papers. Both are members of the AAEC, and Reid was nominated as the organization's Vice President at the Seattle convention last week.
