Calif. Print Weekly, Founded in Internet Era, Going Online-Only

By: E&P Staff The Danville (Calif.) Weekly will publish its last print edition Oct. 2 and go online only, its publisher, Gina Channell-Allen, told readers in the current issue.

The paper has already launched Danville Express, an e-mail digest that is delivered to more than 5,000 people three times a week, she noted. When the print edition is folded, the Express will move to Monday through Friday publication.

"With the cost and environmental impact of printing and mailing a newspaper continuing to rise, we have been planning for the day when we felt an online alternative could more efficiently fill the same needs in the community as a newspaper," she wrote. "Unfortunately, the dismal economy has accelerated these plans."

The Danville Weekly began publication May 6, 2005. It is published by Embarcadero Publishing.
