By: Staff reports Crews, Sommers Testify In Support Of Bill
A California state Assembly committee this week heard testimony from two Sacramento area
journalists who recently underwent legal battles to protect their confidential sources and
unpublished notes, The Sacramento Bee reports.
Both Tim Crews, publisher of the Sacramento Valley Mirror, and David Sommers, editor of the
college newspaper at California State University, Sacramento, testified regarding a bill
proposed to strengthen the state's shield law.
Assemblywoman Carole Migden (D-San Francisco) has proposed legislation that would require
parties that issue subpoenas to give journalists five days notice before they appear in court.
It also requires a trial court to provide written justification for seeking essential
information before finding a journalist in contempt.
The bill, AB1860, could have protected Crews who earlier this year was found in contempt of
court.
