California SPJ Chapter Honors 'SF Chronicle' Science Editor

By: E&P Staff San Francisco Chronicle Science Editor David Perlman has won the Distinguished Service Award from the Northern California chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the second time he has been honored by the media organization.

Perlman's award commemorates his long career. He started at the Chronicle as a copyboy in 1940. He then served in World War II and reported from Paris before returning to the newsroom in 1951. He has been covering science for nearly 50 years.

The Society of Professional Journalists honored him with his first Professional Achievement Award nearly 20 years ago. In giving him the latest award, SPJ cited the support he gave to women and minority journalists when he served as city editor during the 1970s.

"There is no more deserving person to receive this award than Dave Perlman," said Chronicle Editor Ward Bushee. "Dave is revered in the Chronicle newsroom and respected by journalists across the nation. We are honored to work around him and to call him our friend."

Other Chronicle staffers were also recognized by the SPJ. Chip Johnson, the Chronicle's East Bay columnist, won the Opinion Award for "his unrelenting role as a watchdog of the Oakland city administration." The media organization also gave a Career Achievement Award to former staff writer Karola Saekel Craib, who, in 52 years at the Chronicle, covered topics including fashion and food.
