'Camera' Printing Completing Move to Denver

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Camera, Boulder, Colo., reported yesterday that it plans to lay off 29 employees at month's end, as it completes transfer of printing and packaging to the Denver Newspaper Agency. This second round of layoffs stemming from an end to production operations in Boulder brings the total to 48.

All employees are being offered generous severance packages, and many are expected to be hired by the DNA, according to Camera Publisher Al Manzi.

Camera printing began moving to Denver last fall when the primary press shut down at its main office. It continued running a smaller press elsewhere in Boulder, where it printed the Broomfield Enterprise, Colorado Daily, and other titles.

Manzi said the Camera is making the move because its equipment is old and costly to maintain and repair. The DNA's newer, more efficient presses provide better quality and speed at lower cost.

The Camera is owned by Prairie Mountain Publishing, a joint venture between E.W. Scripps Co. and Denver-based MediaNews Group. Scripps, owner of the Rocky Mountain News, and MediaNews, owner of the Denver Post, are partners in the Denver Newspaper Agency.
